A New No Counter-Traction Technique for Closed Reduction of Elbow Supracondylar Fractures in Children
The technique was developed by Mr Elrasheid Saed, a Senior Orthopaedic surgeon and lead trauma surgeon at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Speaking about the new technique Mr Saed commented that current techniques to correct these fractures require counter traction by standard technique and may need open reduction fixation. This new technique can be done without open surgery, using manipulation prior to fixing using a standard wiring technique. Hence the procedure has a shorter theatre time, around half an hour compared to up to 3 hours for the open technique.
This method offers a number of benefits for patients. As no open surgery is required the risk of infection is reduced, and as no traction is required the length of hospital time and the recovery period are both reduced
